144. Through the Vortex

RAW ✔️ The Aranthian Succession – Ruins of Jardlan, p78

"I don't care how bad that storm is – it's gonna be a hell of a lot worse in here if you don't get a move on!"
- Captain Harkal, 17th Palanite Enforcer Battalion

In this scenario, a gang tries to escape their pursuers and is chased into an ambush.

Attacker and Defender

In this scenario, one gang is the attacker and the other is the defender. If this scenario is being played as part of a campaign, then the gang that issued the challenge is the attacker; otherwise, roll off with the winner deciding whether they will attack or defend.

Battle Type

This scenario is a Rolling Roads battle with open sides; vehicles and Wargear that grant the Mounted condition can be included in either gang's starting crew or Reinforcements.

Battlefield

This scenario uses the standard rules for setting up a battlefield, as described in the Battlefield Set-up & Scenarios section of the Necromunda Core Rulebook.

Crews

This scenario uses the standard rules for choosing a crew, as described in the Battlefield Set-up & Scenarios section of the Necromunda: Core Rulebook.

The defender uses the Custom Selection (7) method. The attacker uses the Random Selection (D3+2) method to determine their crew. The rest of the attacker's Fighter and Vehicle cards are shuffled together to form their Reinforcements deck.

Deployment

The defender deploys their starting crew within 9" of the centre of the battlefield. The attacker deploys their starting crew within 6" of the Trailing Edge of the battlefield.

Gang Tactics

This scenario uses the standard rules for gang tactics as described in the Battlefield Set-up & Scenarios section of the Necromunda Core Rulebook, comparing Gang Ratings instead of starting crew.

Ending the Battle

If either gang has no models left on the battlefield at the end of any round, the battle ends immediately.

Victory

If only one gang has models remaining on the battlefield they are victorious, otherwise the battle is a draw.

Rewards

Credits

The victorious gang adds 2D6x10 credits to their Stash.

The losing gang adds D6x10 credits to their Stash.

Experience

Each model that causes an enemy vehicle to become Wrecked earns 1 XP.

Reputation

The victorious gang gains D3 Reputation.

The Vortex

Do not roll for the Season battlefield condition for this battle. Instead, it is automatically Secundan Vortex:

Secundan Vortex: The Visibility (9") rule is in effect. Additionally, at the start of each round roll a D6 for every model on the battlefield. If the result is a 1, lightning strikes nearby; centre the 3" Blast marker on them and scatter it D6". Every model hit by the marker suffers a S7, AP -2, D2 hit as if from a weapon with the Blaze trait.

Prepared Roadblock

At the start of the fifth round, place obstacles across the road within 1" of the Leading Edge of the battlefield.

Reinforcements

At the start of the first four End phases, the attacker receives one Reinforcement. At the start of the fifth End phase, all remaining Reinforcements for the attacker arrive.

Narrative Variant

Race to Spoiltown

If players wish, they may use this scenario to represent Provost-Marshal Logun's race to reach Spoiltown in time to meet up with Lady Haera. In order to do this, make the following changes:

  • The attacking gang should be an Ash Waste Nomads gang led by Asun'ghar, the Lady of Ash.
  • The defending gang should be a Palanite Enforcers gang with a Chronos Pattern Ironcrawler and several Tauros Venators.
