Using The Campaign
RAW ✔️ Necromunda: Hive Secundus Rulebook, p111
The Necromunda: Underhells Campaign is a complete narrative campaign designed for two players. It follows groups of daring Secundan Incursion gangs delving into the ancient ruins of Secundus in search of fabled data crystals. One player takes on the role of these explorers and works against the Malstrain of the Underhells, controlled by the other player, by playing through a series of scenarios, and hopefully escaping with their lives!
The Arbitrator
The Underhells Campaign requires one of the players to take on the role of an Arbitrator. It is the Arbitrator's job to keep track of victories, offer guidance for the players and control any random events or elements. In the Underhells Campaign, the Arbitrator's responsibilities include:
- The Arbitrator takes on the role of the Malstrain, opposing the other player as they hunt for archeo-treasures.
- Helping the other player to create their Secundan Expeditionary gang.
- Keeping track of the Secundan Incursion gangs' progress through the Underhells and keeping their player informed as to the progression of the campaign.
- Deciding when each phase of the campaign begins and ends, as well as when the overall campaign begins and ends.
Secundan Incursion Gangs And The Malstrain
There are two opposing forces in an Underhells Campaign: the Secundan Incursion gangs and the Malstrain. Secundan Incursion gangs are covered on page 139.
Secundan Incursion gangs created for an Underhells Campaign have an initial budget of 1,250 credits instead of the usual 1,000 credits.
The Malstrain controls the twisted horrors of the Underhells in the form of Brood Scum, Malstrain Tyramites and Malstrain Genestealers. Unlike the Secundan Incursion gangs, the forces of the Malstrain are effectively limitless; each scenario will grant the Malstrain player a number of Malstrain Points (MP) to build their forces from (see page 148).
Controlling Territories
The focus of the Underhells Campaign is the exploration of the Underhells of Hive Secundus and, hopefully for the Secundan Incursion gangs, escaping with as many data crystals as possible. To this end, each campaign cycle a battle will be fought for control of one of the locations of the Underhells, representing the route the Secundan Incursion gangs take in their exploration of Hive Secundus.
If they manage to gain control of them, each Territory will grant the Secundan Incursion gang a benefit, called a Boon.
Pre- and Post-battle Sequence
The Underhells Campaign uses all of the standard rules for the pre- and post-battle sequences presented earlier in this book, including the gaining and spending of XP, with the following exceptions:
Pre-battle Sequence
In an Underhells Campaign, the Recruit Hired Guns and Gang Tactics steps of the pre-battle sequence are not used.
Post-battle Sequence
In an Underhells Campaign, the Collect Income and Visit the Trading Post steps are not used. In addition, only the following post-battle actions may be performed:
- Medical Treatment: The fighter performs a Medical Escort action (see page 96). This action does not cost any credits.
- Fabricate Weapon: The fighter makes an Intelligence test; if the test is passed then a fighter in their gang may be equipped with a weapon from their Equipment List that costs no more than 25 credits for free.
- Fabricate Wargear: The fighter makes an Intelligence test; if the test is passed then a fighter in their gang may be equipped with an item of Wargear from their Equipment List that costs no more than 25 credits for free.
- Find Hidden Tech: The fighter may exchange data crystals for Archeo-loot as described on page 115.
Winning
Victory in the Underhells Campaign is determined by whichever side manages to win the battle to control the Broodthrone at the end of the campaign.
